How We Started

In August 2000 Julie Rubino gave birth to a daughter at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, PA. During her stay in the maternity unit, she learned from the nursing staff that many infants leave the hospital without the basic clothing and accessories they need. She was told that the nurses purchase baby items themselves so that a mother-in-need could take her newborn home clothed and protected from the elements. After Julie returned home, the situation she heard about at Pocono Medical Center weighed heavy on her mind.

During the weeks that followed, Julie discussed what she had heard with friends and relatives, and the concept behind "The Angel's Closet" began to emerge. In January 2001 six women became the Board of Directors of "The Angel's Closet" and began meeting at Julie's home monthly to inventory, sort, wash and assemble baby layette bundles. We have moved three times since then and now have a large storage and work room donated by Kenny and Joanne Barthold of the Ann Street Outlet Complex in Stroudsburg, PA.
